About Tangalle
Past Mirissa the coast empties out, and by Tangalle it's just long ribbons of gold sand, cinnamon-scented headlands and some of the island's loveliest hideaway hotels. This is where you go to hear the ocean rather than the bar.
Tangalle marks the point where the busy surf coast gives way to the wild, wide-open south east. Its beaches - Medaketiya, Marakolliya, Goyambokka, Silent Beach - run for uninterrupted kilometres, backed by palms and lagoons instead of shops. Swimming needs more care here (the shelf is steeper), but for space, birdsong and honest fishing-town life, nothing on the south coast comes close.
The area rewards little expeditions. Mulkirigala's rock temple climbs through seven cave terraces of reclining Buddhas to a summit view over jungle and paddy; the Hummanaya blowhole thumps spray skyward down the coast; and lagoon kayaks slip past kingfishers and monitor lizards at golden hour.
After dark comes the quiet spectacle: at Rekawa beach, one of Sri Lanka's most important nesting sites, green and occasionally leatherback turtles haul out year-round to lay under red-light supervision of a long-running conservation project. It's raw, unstaged wildlife - and a big reason the barefoot-luxury crowd fell for Tangalle first.

Is Tangalle good for swimming?
Pick your beach: Goyambokka and the lagoon-protected corners are usually fine in season, while the long open stretches have steeper drop-offs and real currents. Your hotel will point you to the day's safest water - and pools abound.
How many nights does Tangalle deserve?
Three or four. Two feels like a tease once you factor in a turtle night, a lagoon paddle and the necessary hammock hours; five works if you're ending a honeymoon here.
