About Sigiriya
Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most dramatic ancient site - a sheer rock rising 200 metres from the jungle, topped by the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace, with frescoes, mirror walls and water gardens below. It's the centrepiece of the Cultural Triangle.
In the 5th century, King Kashyapa built his palace on top of a 200-metre column of rock and painted its western face with celestial maidens. Fifteen centuries later, the water gardens still align, the frescoes still glow, and the climb past the giant lion's paws remains one of Asia's great arrivals. UNESCO lists it; locals call it the eighth wonder.
Sigiriya village is also the natural base for the whole Cultural Triangle: the golden cave temples of Dambulla are twenty minutes away, the ruined medieval capital of Polonnaruwa about an hour, and the sacred city of Anuradhapura within day-trip reach.
Around the rocks, the dry-zone countryside has its own rhythm - tank lakes full of birdlife, village tuk-tuk lanes, and the famous elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla, where hundreds of wild elephants converge on the receding waters between roughly July and September.

Is the Sigiriya climb difficult?
It's roughly 1,200 steps and steep in places, but manageable with breaks. Go early when it's cool and allow around two to three hours.
Sigiriya or Pidurangala - which should I climb?
Ideally both: Sigiriya for the frescoes, gardens and palace ruins, Pidurangala at sunrise for the best photograph of the rock itself. They're ten minutes apart.
