About Pasikuda
Pasikuda (Passikudah) is the east coast's gentlest bay - a long crescent of reef-sheltered, waist-deep water that stays calm all through the May–September season. It's the island's best swimming beach for families, with a strip of full-service resorts right on the sand.
The bay's party trick is its shallowness: the reef across the mouth of Passikudah Bay knocks the swell down to almost nothing, and the sandy bottom shelves so gradually that you can wade hundreds of metres out and still stand. While the south-west coast is being rained on between May and September, Pasikuda sits in bright, dry sunshine with water like a swimming pool.
Tourism here is young. The coast around Batticaloa was closed off for decades, and when it reopened the bay was developed in one planned strip of resorts - which means wide beach frontage, pools and proper facilities, but very little of the backpacker sprawl found elsewhere. Walk ten minutes north around the headland and you reach Kalkudah, Pasikuda's near-empty twin: a vast, palm-backed beach with barely a building on it.
Beyond the sand there's more than people expect: snorkelling and diving trips run to nearby reefs and wrecks, fishermen still bring outrigger catamarans in through the channel each morning, and Batticaloa town - lagoon-laced, Tamil, and full of character - is forty minutes south for a half-day of fort, kovils and street food.

What to do
Things to do in Pasikuda
Our local shortlist - every one of these can be arranged as part of your tailor-made route.
01
Wade the great shallows
Walk out across the bay's waist-deep, pool-calm water - the safest, gentlest swimming on the island.
02
Escape to Kalkudah beach
Pasikuda's empty twin around the headland: kilometres of palm-backed sand with hardly a footprint.
03
Snorkel and dive the reefs
Boat trips reach coral gardens and WWII-era wrecks in clear east-coast water.
04
Morning with the fishing fleet
Outrigger catamarans land their catch on the sand at dawn - bring a camera, buy the seafood later.
05
Half-day in Batticaloa
Lagoon bridges, a Dutch fort, kovil towers and the east's best short eats, forty minutes south.
06
Kayak the calm bay
The reef-sheltered water is ideal for easy paddling - most resorts lend kayaks and SUPs.
Where to stay in Pasikuda
Pasikuda is resort territory: a planned beachfront strip of 4- and 5-star properties with pools, kids' facilities and direct sand access - the east coast's most comfortable base by far. We match families to the resorts with the best shallow-water frontage, and couples to the quieter boutique ends of the bay; in July–August the good rooms sell out months ahead.
Good to know
Pasikuda questions
When is the best time to visit Pasikuda?
May to September, when the east coast is dry and the bay is at its calmest and clearest. It pairs perfectly with the Cultural Triangle, an hour and a half inland.
Is Pasikuda good for families?
It's the best family beach in Sri Lanka: reef-sheltered, waist-deep for hundreds of metres, with resorts that cater properly to children. We route most summer family trips through it.
Pasikuda or Nilaveli - which should I choose?
Pasikuda for the calmest, shallowest swimming and resort comfort; Nilaveli for a wilder, whiter beach with Pigeon Island snorkelling. On a two-week east-coast trip we often include both.
