Plan around the weather

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there's almost always sunshine somewhere - you just need to pick the right coast. Here's how the seasons work, month by month.

The short version

Which coast, when

The single most useful thing to know about timing a Sri Lanka trip: the weather flips between the south-west and the east depending on the season.

December – April

South & west coast, hill country

Peak season for the classic beaches (Weligama, Mirissa, Galle) and the hill-country train. Dry, sunny and calm seas.

May – September

East coast & Cultural Triangle

Head east: Arugam Bay surf, Trincomalee and Passikudah beaches, plus dry weather for the ancient cities and Yala safari.

October – November

Green shoulder season

Inter-monsoon storms island-wide, but lush, quiet and great value. The Cultural Triangle stays driest; the south improves late November.

Timing questions

What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?

For most first-timers, January to March is ideal: dry, sunny south-coast beaches and clear hill country. If you're travelling in the European summer, head to the east coast instead.

Which side of Sri Lanka is best in summer?

In summer (May–September) the east coast is best - Arugam Bay for surf, Trincomalee and Passikudah for calm beaches - while the south and west are wetter.

When is the worst time to visit Sri Lanka?

October is the most weather-variable month, with inter-monsoon storms island-wide. It's still travellable with a flexible, Cultural-Triangle-focused plan - and it's great value.

When can you see whales in Sri Lanka?

Blue-whale watching off Mirissa on the south coast runs roughly November to April, in the calm-sea season.
