About Jaffna

At the island's far northern tip, Jaffna runs on Tamil time: towering Hindu temple gopurams, palmyra palms over shallow lagoons, causeway-linked islands with wild ponies, and a proud, welcoming culture that feels a world away from the southern beaches.

Jaffna is the capital of Sri Lanka's Tamil north, and it rewards the travellers who make the journey with the island's most distinctive culture. Life orbits the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, whose golden-ochre gopuram towers over daily pujas of drums and oil lamps - and over one of Asia's great festivals each July/August, 25 days of chariots and devotion.

History sits heavily and fascinatingly here: a massive star-shaped Dutch fort on the lagoon, the archive-famous Jaffna Public Library, colonial mansions in various states of elegant decay, and the quiet scars and stories of the civil war years, told with striking openness. It's the most thought-provoking city visit Sri Lanka offers.

Then there's the geography - a peninsula fraying into islands stitched together by causeways across jade-green shallows. Ferries and causeways lead to Nainativu's sacred shrines, Delft's wild ponies, coral-walled gardens and baobab trees, and beaches like Casuarina where the water stays hip-deep for hundreds of metres. Wash it all down with Jaffna crab curry, ice cream at Rio's, and palmyra toddy.

01

Evening puja at Nallur

Drums, bells, camphor flames and the great gopuram glowing at dusk - Sri Lankan Hindu devotion at its most powerful.

02

Walk the Dutch fort ramparts

The star-shaped 17th-century fort broods over the lagoon - sunset from its walls is Jaffna's finest hour.

03

Causeway-hop to Delft

Ferry out to windswept Delft island: wild ponies, coral-stone walls and a baobab planted by Arab traders.

04

Wade at Casuarina beach

The north's favourite beach is shallow, warm and calm for hundreds of metres - paddling perfection.

05

Eat Jaffna crab curry

Darker, hotter and more intense than the south's - the peninsula's signature dish, chased with Rio's ice cream.

06

Visit the Public Library

The elegant white library, burned in 1981 and rebuilt, is the north's symbol of resilience and pride.

07

Ride to Point Pedro

Jaffna questions

Is Jaffna worth the long journey north?

For travellers who want culture, food and a completely different Sri Lanka - absolutely. Pair it with Wilpattu or Anuradhapura to break the drive, or fly up from Colombo in under an hour.

Is Jaffna safe to visit now?

Yes. The war ended in 2009 and the peninsula has been welcoming travellers for well over a decade - locals are notably warm with visitors who come curious and respectful.
