About Anuradhapura
For 1,300 years Anuradhapura was one of Asia's great capitals - and its sacred city still works. Colossal brick dagobas rise over the plains, white-clad pilgrims stream past, and the Bodhi tree at its heart has been tended for over 2,200 years.
Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura grew into a city of monasteries, palaces and engineering marvels - its dagobas were among the tallest structures of the ancient world, out-built only by the pyramids. UNESCO lists the whole sacred city, and unlike most ruins, this one is alive: full-moon poya days bring tens of thousands of pilgrims in white.
The centrepiece is the Sri Maha Bodhi - a tree grown from a cutting of the very fig under which the Buddha reached enlightenment, planted here in 236 BC and documented ever since, making it the oldest recorded tree on earth. Around it spread the great domes: gleaming Ruwanwelisaya, jungle-shouldered Jetavanaramaya, and Mihintale's stairway hill where Buddhism first arrived on the island.
The site is vast and flat, which makes it a joy by bicycle - pedalling between moonstones, twin ponds and monastery ruins under huge dry-zone skies. Most travellers pair it with Sigiriya, an easy drive south-east, or break the journey to Trincomalee and the east coast.

Yes - they're different experiences. Sigiriya is one spectacular rock; Anuradhapura is a living sacred city on a vast scale. History lovers should see both; a half-day here works well en route to Trincomalee.
