Each dry season, as waters recede from a third-century reservoir, wild elephants converge on the fresh grass of its exposed bed - up to several hundred at once. The Gathering at Minneriya is the largest meeting of Asian elephants on Earth, half an hour from Sigiriya.

Minneriya is built around a vast tank commissioned by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD - ancient engineering that still irrigates the region and, every dry season, stages one of the world's great wildlife events. As the water shrinks between June and October, lush grass sprouts on the exposed bed, and elephant herds stream in from the surrounding forests.

At its August–September peak, three hundred or more elephants may share the plain: matriarch-led families grazing shoulder to shoulder, calves mock-charging egrets, bulls testing each other at the water's edge. Jeeps hold a respectful line along the grass while the herds simply get on with their society - it's less a safari than an audience.

The elephants move between Minneriya and neighbouring Kaudulla as water levels shift, so local trackers decide each afternoon which park is 'on'. Either way, the drive slots perfectly into a Cultural Triangle stay: Sigiriya at dawn, pool at midday, The Gathering from mid-afternoon.
