About Bentota

Where the Bentota river slides into the sea, a long golden spit carries the island's most established resort strip - broad sand on one side, a glassy lagoon of watersports on the other, and the gardens of Geoffrey Bawa, father of tropical modernism, just inland.

Bentota has been Sri Lanka's polished beach address since the 1960s, and geography explains why: the river runs parallel to the coast before it meets the ocean, creating a sandy peninsula with surf on the seaward side and utterly calm water behind. Families splash in the lagoon, couples take the beach, and everyone meets for sunset.

The calm river is the west coast's playground - waterskiing, wakeboarding, jet skis and banana boats on the lagoon, and slower mangrove cruises upstream past water monitors, kingfishers and island temples. Sea-turtle conservation projects dot the coast just south around Induruwa and Kosgoda.

This is also Bawa country. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's lakeside garden estate, and Brief Garden, his brother Bevis's flamboyant jungle garden, are both an easy trip - half a day of clipped terraces, hidden sculptures and the architecture that shaped every tropical resort you've ever admired. Fittingly, some of the island's finest beach hotels - several Bawa-designed - stand right here.

Good to know

Bentota questions

Is Bentota better than the south coast beaches?

It's different: Bentota is about polished resorts, calm lagoon water and convenience from the airport, while the deep south is surfier and more bohemian. Many itineraries do both - Bentota to land softly, the south to explore.

What is there to do in Bentota beyond the beach?

More than any other west-coast town: river safaris, watersports, two world-famous gardens, turtle projects and Galle Fort under an hour away. It's a beach base that never feels one-dimensional.
