About Nilaveli
Nilaveli is the east coast's show-stopper: a vast, quiet ribbon of pale sand twenty minutes north of Trincomalee, facing water so clear you can watch fish swim past your knees. Offshore sits Pigeon Island, the country's most accessible coral reef.
Where the south coast's beaches are golden and lively, Nilaveli is white, wide and almost meditative. The beach runs for kilometres with only a scattering of resorts behind the casuarina trees, and in season - May to September - the sea flattens to a clarity that surprises even seasoned travellers. Sunrise here, with the fishing fleet silhouetted offshore, is one of the island's quiet great moments.
A ten-minute boat ride away, Pigeon Island National Park protects two rocky islets wrapped in coral gardens. It's the easiest serious snorkelling in Sri Lanka: blacktip reef sharks patrolling the shallows, turtles grazing, and clouds of reef fish a few fin-kicks from the beach. Divers get boulders, soft coral and the odd wreck nearby.
Nilaveli also shares Trincomalee's deep-water canyon, which pulls sperm whales and blue whales close to shore between May and September. Add Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick twenty minutes south, and the hot springs at Kanniya, and a 'beach stop' here quietly fills four or five days.

May to September, when the east coast is dry and the sea is calm, clear and swimmable. December–February, when the south-west is at its best, is Nilaveli's rough season.
Is Pigeon Island worth it?
Yes - it's the best easy snorkelling in the country. Go on a calm morning, wear reef-safe sunscreen, and don't touch the coral; the park fee is worth every rupee.
Nilaveli or Uppuveli?
Nilaveli for the bigger, whiter, quieter beach and Pigeon Island access; Uppuveli for a livelier village strip with more restaurants. They're fifteen minutes apart, so many guests do both.
