About Galle
Galle Fort is one of Asia's most atmospheric old towns - a UNESCO-listed Dutch fort of coral-stone streets, heritage hotels, galleries and cafés, all wrapped in sea ramparts made for sunset walks. It's the cultural anchor of the south coast.
Built by the Portuguese and perfected by the Dutch in the 17th century, Galle Fort is the best-preserved colonial sea fort in Asia - and, crucially, it's alive. Families still live inside the walls, kids play cricket against the ramparts, and the lighthouse still works. It never feels like a museum.
Within the walls you'll find a small, dense world: Dutch-era churches and mosques on the same street, jewellers and bookshops in coral-stone villas, courtyard cafés, and some of Sri Lanka's most storied heritage hotels - including grand old properties now run to full 5-star standard.
The ritual everyone remembers is the rampart walk: start at the lighthouse an hour before sunset, drift past Flag Rock as the light turns gold, and watch local daredevils dive from the walls into the sea below. Then dinner in a 300-year-old courtyard. Galle does evenings better than anywhere on the coast.
