About Yala National Park
Yala has one of the highest leopard densities anywhere on earth, alongside elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears and hundreds of bird species. It's the island's flagship safari, and it slots neatly between the hill country and the south coast.
Yala protects nearly a thousand square kilometres of dry-zone jungle, rock outcrops, lagoons and empty beach on the island's south-east corner. Its famous Block 1 holds leopard densities few places on the planet can match - which is why a dawn drive here is on almost every Sri Lanka itinerary we build.
Leopards are the headline, but rarely the whole story of a drive: elephants amble across the tracks, crocodiles line the tank edges, sloth bears snuffle through the scrub in fruiting season, and painted storks and peacocks fill the lagoons. The park sits on a major bird migration route, with over 200 species recorded.
The difference between a good safari and a frustrating one is almost always the guide. We book experienced naturalist trackers, time drives for first light, and - when the main gate gets busy in high season - quietly switch to quieter blocks or to neighbouring Lunugamvehera and Bundala.

Yala for leopards and variety; Udawalawe for near-certain elephant herds and fewer jeeps. They're 90 minutes apart, so keen wildlife travellers often do a night at each.
