About Ella
Ella is the hill country at its most welcoming: cool air, tea-covered slopes, short and rewarding hikes, and the arrival point of the world-famous train from Kandy. It's the natural bridge between the beaches and the cultural heartland.
Ella sits in a gap in the hills at around a thousand metres, looking all the way down to the southern plains through the notch of Ella Gap. The air is cool, the light is soft, and everything worth doing starts from the one friendly main street.
The town's icons are walkable: Little Adam's Peak is a gentle 45-minute climb through tea rows; the Nine Arch Bridge - a soaring colonial-era viaduct in the jungle - is a stroll along the tracks; and Ella Rock is the proper half-day hike for big views. Trains still curl around the hillsides on their way to and from Kandy, arguably the world's most beautiful rail journey.
Around the walks, life is pleasingly slow: tea-factory tours at Halpewatte, waterfall dips at Ravana Falls, cookery classes in family kitchens, and a strip of relaxed restaurants for the evening. Two nights here is the hinge of almost every classic Sri Lanka route.
