About Colombo
Most trips brush past Colombo - which is exactly why a well-planned day here surprises people. Sri Lanka's capital mixes colonial arcades and chaotic bazaars with rooftop bars, serious restaurants and the island's grandest 5-star hotels, all strung along the ocean.
Colombo has been a trading port for two thousand years, and every era left a layer: Moorish mosques in Pettah's bazaar lanes, Dutch churches and canals, the British-built Fort district's grand arcades, and a new skyline - Lotus Tower included - rising over it all. It's dense, noisy and far more charming than its reputation.
The city's rituals are easy to love. At dusk, half of Colombo drifts to Galle Face Green, the mile of oceanfront lawn where kites fly and isso vadai (prawn fritter) carts do their best trade. In Pettah, each street sells one thing - goldsmiths here, spices there - while Gangaramaya Temple and the lake-set Seema Malaka offer pockets of calm in the thick of it.
And then there's the eating: legendary crab restaurants, hopper stalls, colonial tea lounges and rooftop cocktails over the harbour. With the airport ninety minutes north, a first or last night here - in one of the grand seafront hotels - bookends a trip beautifully.
