About Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya - 'Hiri' to everyone who's been - is a tiny horseshoe bay near Dickwella where jungle-covered headlands wrap around a mellow surf break and a strip of barefoot cafés. In a decade it's gone from secret to darling of the south coast, and it still earns the affection.
The bay is small enough to take in with one glance: a deep green horseshoe of palms, a crescent of sand, a gentle wave peeling on the inside for beginners and a punchier left off the point for those who've done this before. Behind the sand sits a laid-back scene of specialty coffee, smoothie bowls, yoga shalas and surf racks - young, international and very easy to settle into.
Hiri's rise has been quick, but the geography keeps it human-scale: there's simply no room for big development inside the bay, so stays are villas, boutique guest houses and surf lodges tucked into the palms. Quieter Dickwella beach is a ten-minute walk over the headland when you want space, and the wild south coast around Tangalle unrolls just beyond.
The area rewards small adventures: the Hummanaya blowhole spouts through a cliff twenty minutes east, the vast seated Buddha of Wewurukannala Vihara watches over Dickwella town, and empty coves hide along the coast in both directions. Season runs November to April, when the sea glasses off and the sunsets go big.

Inside the bay it's all boutique: palm-shaded villas, design-led guest houses and surf lodges a barefoot minute from the wave - intimate rather than grand, and gone fast in high season. For pools and more space, we look to the villas on the Dickwella headlands, five minutes away. Either way, December–March needs booking months out.

Is Hiriketiya good for beginner surfers?
It's one of the best beginner bays in Sri Lanka: a gentle, consistent inside wave over sand, warm water and good schools on the beach. The point break gives you somewhere to progress to.
When is the best time for Hiriketiya?
November to April - calm seas, clean small surf and dry, sunny days. The bay stays lovely into May, but the sea picks up through the summer monsoon.
Is Hiriketiya too busy now?
It's popular, and the bay is small - that's the trade-off for the charm. Come early in the season (November) or late (April), surf at dawn, and walk over to Dickwella when you want quiet sand.
