About Kitulgala
Kitulgala is a river town buried in rainforest on the wet western slopes of the hill country - the island's white-water rafting capital, and its best all-round adventure stop: canyoning, waterfall jumps, jungle treks and birding in one green valley.
The Kelani River makes the town. Above Kitulgala it tumbles through a series of grade 2–3 rapids with names the guides relish - perfect first-timer white water, big enough to soak everyone, safe enough for families - before sliding into calm pools where you float the last stretch on your back. Rafting here is a two-hour classic that almost anyone can do.
The adventure menu runs deeper: canyoning down waterfall chutes, confidence jumps into jade plunge pools, zip lines over the valley, and guided treks into the Makandawa rainforest reserve across the river - home to endemic birds, torrent fish and leeches with excellent work ethic. Film buffs get a bonus: David Lean shot 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' on this very stretch in 1957, and the concrete footings still hide on the bank.
Kitulgala sits conveniently on the Colombo–Hatton road, roughly halfway between the airport side of the island and the tea country - which makes it a natural, adrenaline-flavoured overnight between coast and hills rather than a detour. River lodges with rapids-view verandas complete the argument.
