About Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya is a raw, wind-blown peninsula between a giant lagoon and the open Indian Ocean - Asia's premier kitesurfing destination, and the launch point for some of the biggest dolphin pods on earth. It's Sri Lanka at its least polished and most exhilarating.
The geography is made for kitesurfing: a long sand spit encloses a vast, flat, waist-deep lagoon, and the wind funnels down it with machine-like reliability - strong and steady from May to October, gentler but dependable from December to March. Two seasons a year is a rarity in the kite world, and riders come from everywhere for the butter-flat water and empty space.
Offshore is the other headline. The Kalpitiya coast fronts one of the Indian Ocean's richest stretches of sea: spinner dolphins travel here in superpods that can number over a thousand, and between November and April sperm whales - occasionally even blue whales - cruise the deeper water beyond the reef.
On land, this is dry-zone frontier country: salt pans, fishing villages, a small Dutch fort, and the flamingo-flecked lagoons of Wilpattu's coastal fringe. Don't come for boutique polish or nightlife; come for wind in your ears, seafood off the boat and the feeling of a coast that tourism has only half-discovered.

Can complete beginners learn to kitesurf here?
Yes - the lagoon is flat, shallow and free of obstacles, which makes it one of the fastest places anywhere to progress. Schools run IKO courses with radio helmets and boat support.
Is Kalpitiya worth it for non-kiters?
